Compression Fracture From Water Skiing

by Paul
(Wisconsin)

I have always had a strong back, and I have always loved the water. But I made the mistake of water skiing behind a boat that wasn't running properly. The motor kept dying out. Well it happened just as I was about to get up out of the water. It jerked and stopped and jerked again and caused a compression fracture in my lower spine. That was the most horrible back pain I've had in my life.
I didn't know what happened. I hoped I just pulled a muscle or something that would fix itself, but, it didn't and I ended up at the clinic for x rays where they told me I had a compression fracture. This was a long slow process before the pain went away and I don't think my back will ever be the same. That is the end of water skiing for me.
Now I wonder if some sort of chronic back inflammation has set in because this accident was about 15 years ago and lately my back is hurting again. Thank you for bringing back inflammation to my attention.

Compression Fracture From Water Skiing
by: Paul

I had therapy for my compression fracture for several months, and continued to do exercises at home to build up the muscles around the spine. It seemed pretty good but a few years ago I bought a mini trampoline and I must have jarred something about a year ago now because I'm doing the back exercises again and it doesn't feel right. A bad back is just miserable when you are used to being active.
Do you have any tips?
thanks
Paul

Compression Fracture From Water Skiing

WOW, same thing happened to me this past summer, I fractured my L4 just coming out of the water when
the boat jerked forward. I keep getting the same story from my family physician, it'll take time to heal. It happend on Labour Day and it's end of January now and I am still waiting to see the back specialist for my "consult", our wonderful Canadian health care system! Was anything done for your fracture Paul? I used to be a runner and still can't handle the impact so I've had to settle for trying to speed walk.
